What Is a Float Value?
Every skin in Counter-Strike 2 has a float value — a number between 0 and 1 that determines how worn the skin looks. A float of 0.00 means the skin is in perfect condition. A float of 1.00 means it's completely beaten up.
Float values are permanently assigned when a skin drops or is unboxed. They cannot be changed after the fact — not through trading, not through the Steam market, and not through any in-game action.
The Float Scale
The full float scale ranges from 0.00000000 to 1.00000000, and it maps to five wear conditions:
| Wear Condition | Float Range | Short Name | |---------------|-------------|------------| | Factory New | 0.00 – 0.07 | FN | | Minimal Wear | 0.07 – 0.15 | MW | | Field-Tested | 0.15 – 0.38 | FT | | Well-Worn | 0.38 – 0.45 | WW | | Battle-Scarred | 0.45 – 1.00 | BS |
A skin with a float of 0.069 is Factory New. A skin with a float of 0.071 is Minimal Wear. That tiny difference crosses the wear boundary and usually means a significant price difference — even though the skins look virtually identical.
Min and Max Floats
Not every skin can exist at every float value. Each skin pattern has its own minimum and maximum float, defined by the game's files.
For example:
- The AWP | Asiimov has a min float of 0.18 and max float of 0.90. That means there is no Factory New or Minimal Wear Asiimov — the best you can get is a low-float Field-Tested.
- The M4A4 | Howl ranges from 0.00 to 0.40. It can exist in Factory New through Well-Worn, but never Battle-Scarred.
You can check the float range for any skin on its detail page here on SkinsAtlas. We display both the minimum and maximum float alongside the wear condition tabs.
How Float Affects Appearance
Float value controls how much scratching, fading, and wear appears on the skin's texture. Lower floats mean less visible damage. Higher floats mean more scratches, paint chips, and exposed base metal.
However, the relationship between float and appearance is not always linear. Some skins look almost identical across a wide float range, while others change dramatically with small float differences. This depends entirely on how the skin's finish was designed.
Key points:
- Skins in the same wear tier can look different. A 0.01 FN looks cleaner than a 0.06 FN.
- Skins near wear boundaries often look similar. A 0.069 FN and a 0.071 MW are visually almost identical, despite being in different categories.
- Some finishes hide wear better. Anodized Multicolored and solid-color finishes show less visible wear than Patina or Spray-Paint finishes.
Why Float Matters for Pricing
Float is one of the biggest factors in skin pricing, especially at the extremes:
- Low float Factory New skins (0.00x or lower) command significant premiums. A 0.001 float skin can be worth many times more than a 0.05 of the same skin.
- Max float Battle-Scarred skins also attract collectors. Some players specifically seek the most worn-looking skins.
- "Float caps" on popular skins (like the Asiimov's 0.18 minimum) create their own micro-market. The lowest-float Asiimov available is a collector's item.
When trading or buying skins, always check the exact float — not just the wear label. Two "Factory New" skins of the same pattern can differ vastly in price based on their float.
How to Check Float Values
There are several ways to check a skin's float:
- In-game inspect — Hover over a skin in your inventory and check the wear value.
- Steam Market listings — Some listings display the float, but not all.
- SkinsAtlas — Every skin page on our site shows the possible float range and wear conditions.
- Third-party tools — Sites like CSFloat and similar services can show exact float values for items on the market.
Float Value FAQ
Can I improve a skin's float? No. Float values are permanent and cannot be changed.
Does StatTrak affect float? No. StatTrak and float are independent properties. A StatTrak skin follows the same float rules as its normal counterpart.
Do Souvenir skins have different float ranges? Souvenir skins use the same float ranges as their normal versions. However, since Souvenir skins come from match drops rather than cases, their float distribution can be different in practice.
What's the most desirable float? Generally, the lowest possible float (closest to 0.00) commands the highest premium. But "pattern-based" skins like Case Hardened care more about the pattern index than the float.
